Google Prepares to Break Ground on Botetourt Data Center

Google has received a permit to begin grading for its planned data center campus in Botetourt County. According to county officials, contractors will start grading after Labor Day, with the project still requiring federal and state environmental permits.

The company's plans have been met with opposition from the Southwest Virginia Data Center Transparency Alliance, which has condemned the grading permit, citing delays in completing applications for necessary permits.

Despite these concerns, the county release states that the project will not result in disturbances to local wetlands, although temporary access bridges may be used during construction. Blasting may also be used during site preparation, with plans reviewed by the Virginia State Fire Marshal's Office.
