Google Pursues $1.5B Deal Amid AI Talent Drain
Google is in talks to acquire key personnel and license technology from AI coding startup Mechanize for over $1.5 billion, amid a broader talent drain at the search giant.
Chief Scientist Jeff Dean, who co-founded Google Brain and led the development of Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), has left after 27 years to co-found Discovery Loop with three other Google veterans.
The departure highlights a trend of prominent AI researchers leaving Google for rival research organizations or independent ventures. In addition to Dean's exit, several senior engineers have recently departed for Anthropic and OpenAI.
