Google Pushes Users Toward AI Search Features on Homepage
Google is testing new AI buttons on its homepage to push users toward AI search features. The company has been experimenting with various forms of artificial intelligence in its Search product for about two years, but this change marks a significant shift in prioritization. The classic homepage layout has survived browser wars, the rise of smartphones, and redesigns of Search itself.
For logged-out users, the search button on Google's homepage is being replaced with three shortcuts: creating images, asking about files, and brainstorming. These features do not require a person to sign in to a Google account to access, but creating images does require authentication. The AI Mode toggle now sits inside the search box.
The redesign of the Google homepage is part of a broader pattern of Google improving Search with various forms of artificial intelligence. The company has introduced AI Overviews and launched AI Mode as a separate search option. The new buttons on the Google homepage are similar to those in the Google Search app for Android and iOS, but have been absent from the desktop version until now.
For SEO professionals and publishers, this change is significant because it emphasizes user engagement with Google's models before arriving at a results page of blue links. This design shift may accelerate traffic challenges for publishers further if applied to logged-in users.
