Google Readies Gemini 4 Flagship Amid Rising Pressure from Rivals
Google is under pressure to release its next flagship model, Gemini 4, after a series of delays and lackluster performances from previous models. According to Koray Kavukcuoglu, head of Google DeepMind, Gemini 4 will launch 'much earlier' than expected, with an early version set to be released as soon as possible.
The model has been in post-training since July, and a growing number of leaks have surfaced about its capabilities. The training process is focused on coding and autonomous AI agents, with Google aiming for a significantly larger frontier model.
However, the company's last true flagship, Gemini 3 Pro, dates back to November 2025, and previous models have failed to meet expectations. Gemini 3.5 Pro was originally announced for Google's I/O developer conference in May but never shipped due to coding performance issues.
