Google Reflects Trump's Name Change for Lake Ontario on Maps

Google has updated its Maps application to reflect President Donald Trump's recent order renaming Lake Ontario as 'Lake America' for users in the United States. The change is part of an ongoing trade war with Canada, where both countries have imposed billions of dollars in added tariffs on each other's goods.

The update comes days after Trump's decision and echoes a similar move made by Google in 2025 when it renamed the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America. According to Google, this change is based on its practice of using names assigned by the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS).

People using Maps in the US will see 'Lake America', while those in Canada will continue to see 'Lake Ontario'. Those outside of both countries will see both names.
