Google Renames Lake Ontario to Lake America Amidst Trade War Tensions

Google has updated its Maps service to reflect a US government directive renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America. This move highlights escalating diplomatic tensions between Washington and Ottawa.

The change was made in response to an executive order signed by US President Donald Trump, which directed American agencies to use the new name in all official databases. The update affects users in the US, who will now see 'Lake America' when using Google Maps.

However, users in Canada will continue to see Lake Ontario, while those outside of both countries will be presented with both names as Lake Ontario (Lake America). This dual naming convention is a result of Google's policy to reflect name changes in official government sources.

The renaming dispute coincides with an intensified trade war between the two nations. Canada has announced it will impose counter-tariffs on US imports, starting September 8th, following the breakdown of trade negotiations and the imposition of 50% US tariffs on Canadian goods in August.
