Google Renames Lake Ontario to 'Lake America' for US Searches
The Great Lake Ontario has been renamed to 'Lake America' in US searches on Google Maps following an executive order by President Donald Trump. The change, which affects only users in the United States, was made after Trump's order mandating the name change amid his trade war with Canada.
The U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) formally changed the lake's name to 'Lake America', and Google updated its Maps accordingly. Users outside of the US will still see both names, with 'Lake Ontario' appearing in parentheses after 'Lake America'.
This is not the first time Trump has attempted to rebrand geographic landmarks; he previously tried to change the 'Gulf of Mexico' to 'Gulf of America', and Google followed suit. However, other mapping services like Waze and Apple Maps still label the lake as 'Lake Ontario'.
