Google Restricts AI Model Access for Free and Low-Tier Users
Google has updated its AI model subscription plans, restricting access to its more advanced Gemini models for free and low-tier users. Starting October 4, the company announced changes that will take effect this month. The Gemini Pro model, previously available to some free users, will now only be accessible to subscribers of the $19.99-per-month AI Pro plan.
Free users and subscribers to the $9.99-per-month AI Plus plan will lose access to the Pro model entirely. Additionally, free users will no longer be able to use the Gemini Flash model, instead being limited to the lower-performing Gemini Flash-Lite model. These restrictions will begin on October 9, with individual notifications sent via email regarding the specific implementation schedule.
Google has allowed users to adjust the reasoning level of the models from low, medium, or high. While increasing the reasoning level can improve answer quality, it consumes more of the AI usage limits allocated by Google. Users of the AI Pro and AI Ultra plans, which cost $99.99 or more per month, will also gain access to the Deep Think feature, utilizing multiple models for reasoning.
Google's latest pricing restructure is seen as a strategy to attract high-tier plan subscribers ahead of the official release of its new top-tier model, Gemini 4 Argon. After releasing Gemini 3.1 Pro in February, development on Pro models stagnated for about seven months before the unveiling of Gemini 4 Argon on September 30. However, complaints are expected due to the restrictions placed on free users.
