Google Restricts Free Gemini Access Starting October 2026
Starting October 9, 2026, Google will significantly restrict free access to its Gemini AI service. Free users will only have access to the most basic model, Flash-Lite, losing access to Flash and Pro. This change is part of Google's ongoing effort to manage computational costs, which have risen with more powerful AI models.
Even paid subscribers will see changes. The Google AI Plus plan ($4.99 per month) will retain Flash-Lite and Flash but will lose access to Pro. Users who rely on Pro for complex tasks will need to upgrade to AI Pro or AI Ultra. Meanwhile, AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers will gain additional flexibility, including a new feature called Deep Think for computationally intensive tasks.
Google's decision comes after a series of adjustments to its usage limits. In May 2026, the company shifted from tracking daily prompts to a more complex quota system that refreshes every five hours. The latest changes aim to balance rising computing costs with user needs, though some users may find the restrictions frustrating.
Separately, Google introduced Gemini 4 Argon on October 1, 2026, but this new model is initially limited to U.S. government agencies and select cybersecurity professionals. It does not yet affect the limits for standard Gemini app users.
