Google Restricts Free Users to Flash-Lite Model Starting October 9
Google is restructuring access to its Gemini language models, with changes rolling out starting October 9. Free users will be limited to the Flash-Lite model, losing access to the standard Flash and Pro versions. This shift is part of Google's effort to manage its AI resources more efficiently.
AI Plus subscribers, who pay $4.99 per month, will also face restrictions. They will only have access to Flash-Lite and Flash, losing the Pro model. Google plans to notify these users via email about the upcoming changes.
Higher-tier subscribers, particularly those on the $19.99 per month AI Pro plan, will retain access to Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro. Additionally, they will gain the Deep Think feature, designed for complex problem-solving. This feature is currently only available to users of the more expensive $99.99 and $199.99 per month plans.
The Gemini app will also introduce low, medium, and high effort levels for its models in October. These settings aim to improve task completion and answer thoroughness, though higher settings will consume more of the user's limits. These adjustments reflect a broader industry trend in structuring access to advanced AI tools.
