Google Restricts Gemini AI Model Access for Free and AI Plus Users
Google is making changes to how users access its Gemini AI models, with free and AI Plus subscribers facing restrictions starting October 9th. Non-paying users will be limited to the Gemini 3.5-Flash-Lite model and won't have access to newer versions like Gemini 3.6 Flash or later.
The AI Plus tier, which costs $4.99 a month, will also see reduced access. These users will only be able to use Flash and Flash-Lite models, losing access to Gemini 3.1-Pro and newer reasoning models.
Google has been rolling out updates to its lightweight Gemini models, with the latest being Gemini 3.8 Flash in September. The company is also testing Gemini 4 “Argon” in closed environments before a wider release. This upcoming model may introduce the first advanced reasoning model since Gemini 3.1 Pro.
Additionally, Google plans to introduce low, medium, and high effort settings for models, though usage limits will be exhausted more quickly based on the selected effort level.
