Google Restricts Gemini AI Models to Paid Subscribers
Google is restricting access to its more powerful Gemini AI models, moving them behind paid subscription plans. Starting October 9, 2026, users without a subscription will only have access to the Flash-Lite model, while the regular Flash and Pro models will be available exclusively to paying customers.
The tech giant has updated its support page to outline these changes. Free users will retain access to Gemini, but only through the less capable Flash-Lite model. Paid plans like Google AI Plus will include Flash-Lite and Flash, while AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers will gain access to all three models: Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro.
Google is also expanding access to its Deep Think feature, which was previously limited to AI Ultra subscribers. AI Pro subscribers will now be able to use Deep Think, which employs parallel thinking to tackle complex tasks. Additionally, users can now choose the effort level, low, medium, or high, for Gemini’s responses, with higher effort levels consuming more of their usage limit.
Usage limits remain unchanged. Free users get the standard limit, while AI Plus subscribers receive twice the standard limit. AI Pro offers four times the standard limit, and AI Ultra provides either five times or twenty times the AI Pro limit, depending on the subscription.
