Google Restricts Gemini Pro Access to Higher-Priced Plans
Google has updated its pricing structure for the Gemini AI model, restricting access to the high-performance Gemini Pro for free users and low-cost subscribers. Starting this month, the Pro model will only be available to those on the $19.99/month AI Pro plan or higher. This change affects not only free users but also subscribers on the $9.99/month AI Plus plan, who will no longer have access to the Pro model.
Free users will also face further limitations, as Google is restricting their access to Gemini Flash, leaving them with only the lower-performing Gemini Flash-Light model. These restrictions for free users take effect on October 9th. Google plans to notify paying subscribers about the specific timing of changes via email.
Despite these restrictions, Google has allowed users to adjust the reasoning level of models among low, medium, and high. While lower-performing models can improve answer quality by raising the reasoning level, this will deplete AI usage limits more quickly. Subscribers on the AI Pro and AI Ultra plans can also use Deep Sync, which reasons by leveraging multiple models simultaneously.
The overhaul is seen as a strategy to boost sign-ups for higher-priced plans, coinciding with the launch of the new top-tier model Gemini 4 Argon. Industry observers view this move as an effort to strengthen differentiation of higher-priced plans by offering the latest models that consume significant compute resources, aiming to drive paid conversions. However, backlash from users is expected due to the loss of access to both the Pro model and the existing lightweight Flash model.
