Google reveals optimal time to book holiday flights for best deals
According to data released by Google, now is the optimal time to book flights for the upcoming holiday season. October is expected to offer the best deals for Thanksgiving travel, while the most economical time to book Christmas flights has shifted earlier than in previous years.
Google's analysis for 2026-2027 holiday travel breaks down as follows: International flights see the lowest prices 89 days before departure, Thanksgiving flights hit their lowest prices 34 days before departure, and Christmas travel is cheapest 56 days before departure. Spring break flights are most affordable 50 days out, while summer vacation flights are best booked 21 days in advance.
For typical domestic flights, Google recommends purchasing airfare 39 days before departure for the cheapest option. Overseas trips to Europe should be booked 90 days in advance, with Google noting that waiting rarely pays off. Trips to Mexico and the Caribbean see the lowest prices 43 days before departure.
Despite potential fluctuations in fuel costs, travelers may still face high airfares. Major U.S. airlines and industry analysts suggest that even if oil and jet fuel prices fall, high airfares could persist due to increased operating expenses and adjustments made by carriers.
