Google scales back free Gemini access starting October 9
Starting October 9, Google will significantly limit the free tier of its Gemini AI service for personal accounts. Free users will lose access to both Gemini Flash and Gemini Pro, leaving only the Flash-Lite model as an option. This change applies only to personal accounts and does not affect Google Workspace accounts.
Google AI Plus subscribers, who pay $4.99 per month, will retain access to Flash-Lite and Flash but will lose Pro. Meanwhile, higher-tier plans like Google AI Pro ($19.99 per month) and Google AI Ultra will keep all three models. Additionally, AI Pro subscribers will gain access to Deep Think, an advanced problem-solving mode previously exclusive to AI Ultra.
To help manage compute consumption, Google will introduce a new setting allowing users to adjust model effort across low, medium, or high. Higher effort settings will deliver more thorough responses but consume more of the user's usage allowance.
Professionals relying on personal Gemini accounts for writing, research, and coding tasks may face workflow disruptions. Google recommends testing recurring tasks with available models before upgrading to a paid plan to assess performance differences in accuracy, response time, and manual correction needs.
