Google Search Dominance Still Drives Alphabet Stock
Google's search dominance remains crucial for its financial performance. Alphabet Inc.'s Google Search drives more than half of company revenue and over 70% of profits, according to Evercore ISI analyst Mark Mahaney.
Mahaney noted that if there's a problem with Google Search, it affects the entire stock. He believes Google's search position is strengthening, particularly since the company regained share after consumers turned to OpenAI's ChatGPT in early 2023.
Google's Gemini artificial intelligence platform has also narrowed the gap with ChatGPT, but Mahaney warned that leadership could shift again as both companies continue improving their products. The analyst expects Google to introduce its next-generation Gemini 4 frontier model later this year and sees stronger adoption of tensor processing units (TPUs) providing another growth driver.
Mahaney emphasized the importance of AI safety, stating that Alphabet has generally taken a responsible approach to AI development. He also highlighted several product catalysts ahead for Google, including Gemini Spark and TPUs, which support Evercore's bullish view on Alphabet stock.
