Google Seeks Approval for Over 200 New Emergency Generators at Fort Wayne Data Center

Google has submitted a request to add more than 200 emergency generators at its Fort Wayne data center in Indiana. The company is seeking approval from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) for the additional backup power sources, which would bring the total number of generators on site to over 270.

The proposal comes after IDEM approved a request to add more than 140 emergency diesel generators to the data center campus in April. In addition to these new units, Google has also installed air pollution controls on several generators to reduce emissions and meet or exceed EPA Tier 4 emission standards.

Google claims that the additional generators are necessary as a safety net in case of power outages or scheduled maintenance checks. According to the company, each unit will only be used for less than 10 hours per year, with the majority of testing taking place during non-operational periods.
