Google Sells Motorola to Lenovo in Strategic Shift
Google acquired Motorola Mobility in 2012 for $12.5 billion as it sought to expand its mobile hardware presence and protect its Android operating system from patent lawsuits.
The acquisition was a strategic move to bolster Android, which was already central to Google's mobile strategy, by leveraging Motorola's technology patents and expertise.
However, just two years later, Google decided to sell off the struggling handset business to Lenovo for $2.91 billion while retaining around 15,000 of the remaining patents.
Lenovo faced challenges initially, with a significant decline in sales, but it eventually turned things around by refocusing on key markets and product lines, including budget-friendly Moto G phones and higher-end Edge models.
