Google Sends AI Hardware to Orbit with SpaceX

Google is taking its Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) to new heights by launching four of them into orbit aboard SpaceX's Transporter-18 rideshare mission on October 1. The experiment, part of Project Suncatcher, will study how the AI hardware handles launch conditions and sustained operation in space.

The TPUs have already been tested against extreme conditions on Earth, including radiation testing that exposed them to levels above their estimated five-year mission dose without any hard failures. Engineers also had to address cooling challenges in a vacuum environment by using heat pipes and radiators instead of ordinary airflow.

Project Suncatcher aims to develop solar-powered satellites that can support useful AI computing capacity, but the concept still faces numerous hurdles, including cost, networking, reliability, security, and integration. The experiment will provide valuable data on whether orbital compute can become a practical option for enterprises in the future.
