Google Sends Tensor Processing Units into Space with SpaceX Partnership
Google has partnered with SpaceX to send Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) into space as part of its Project Suncatcher initiative. The project aims to test how TPUs perform in space and potentially create scalable machine learning infrastructure in orbit.
The first satellite, named MVP, is set to launch on October 1 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced the partnership with a tweet, saying 'Well, we are going to find out' if TPUs can survive and operate in space.
Pichai first discussed Project Suncatcher in 2025 as a long-term research moonshot exploring the possibility of hosting machine learning infrastructure in space. He acknowledged that the concept may seem 'crazy today,' but argued it is necessary to meet the vast demands of future computing power.
