Google Shortens Chromebook Support Lifespan to Eight Years

Google has revised its support policy for Chromebooks, shortening their lifespan from ten to eight years. The change affects new devices purchased today and those that will be released in the future.

The company's decision comes as it prepares to replace Chromebooks with Googlebooks, a new line of web-centric computers powered by the Gemini AI. While some newer commercial models may be eligible for an upgrade to Googlebook OS, details on migration paths are still pending.

Existing ChromeOS licenses will not transfer to Googlebook OS, and users will need to acquire a new license for management tools. This requirement has sparked concerns that continued use of Chromebooks may become less attractive or even unviable in the future.
