Google Simplifies Password Transfers Between Android Managers

Google has made it easier for Android users to transfer their saved passwords between different password managers. The company is now allowing users to import or copy their passwords and passkeys from one provider to another using a standardized data structure called Credential Exchange Format (CXF). This format was designed by the FIDO Alliance to help users move log-ins between different password managers.

The new feature uses Android's built-in functionality to detect existing password managers on the device and show which ones can be imported from. Users then select, review, and authorize the transfer, after which Android completes the migration automatically. This eliminates the need for manual import and export of passwords via a CSV file, which can pose security risks.

The feature is currently available on Google Password Manager, 1Password, Bitwarden Password Manager, and Dashlane, with more password managers to be integrated in the future. The feature supports devices running Android 8 (2017) and above.
