Google Slapped with Record-Breaking EU Fine for Location Data Mishandling

Google has been fined €403 million ($463 million) for breaching EU location data rules, according to Ireland's Data Protection Commission. The fine is related to Google's handling of user location data in its Web & App Activity and Location History settings.

The investigation found that Google did not lawfully or fairly process location data from 2018 until February 2020. The company also failed to be transparent when processing personal data in its Location Accuracy feature on Android devices.

Google stated that the case centers around historical policies that have since been updated, and that they have evolved their practices since 2019 with robust tools for managing location data.
