Google Slows Down Developer Access to Pixel Kernel Source Code
Google has introduced changes to how developers access the Pixel kernel source code. The automatic public download system has been replaced by a manual request process through Google Forms, resulting in weeks-long delays for open-source developers building custom ROMs and security updates.
This change affects the Linux kernel source required for custom ROMs to build, test, debug, and maintain alternative operating systems. GrapheneOS is particularly affected, as its releases for Pixel devices depend on receiving and testing the relevant kernel source before updates can be completed.
GrapheneOS notes that what previously took hours now takes weeks due to the manual request process. The company also points out that Google is no longer providing the source code with an accessible step-by-step update history, making it harder for developers to trace changes and bug fixes.
This change follows Google's move towards twice-yearly AOSP source releases. GrapheneOS plans to avoid this issue by working directly with Motorola and hosting its own code for upcoming Motorola phones.
