Google Spam Update Takes Up to Two Weeks to Complete

Google has released its September 2026 spam update to its search rankings, the fourth enforcement cycle of the year and the first to carry a rollout allowance of as long as 14 days. Unlike previous updates this year, which took only a few days, this one may take up to two weeks to complete.

The update applies globally and to all languages, and is aimed at websites that use tricks against Google's anti-spam policies. Sites caught violating these policies can slide down the results or drop out of them entirely, while sites that stay within the policies are not targeted.

Google first deployed its AI-based spam-prevention system, SpamBrain, publicly in December 2022 to combat link spam. According to Google's documentation on spam updates, sites that violate its policies can be demoted or disappear from results altogether. Recovery is measured in months, conditional on automated systems learning over time that a site now complies.
