Google Speeds Up Gemini 4 Launch to Catch Up with Rivals

Google's Gemini 4 is making rapid progress in its development cycle. The latest flagship model from Google DeepMind, led by Koray Kavukcuoglu, has reached the post-training stage, a significant milestone in its journey to launch.

The announcement marked Kavukcuoglu's first public appearance since taking over as head of DeepMind following Demis Hassabis' departure in August. The new chief emphasized that great progress is underway on Gemini 4, with internal results showing promising early post-training output.

Google aims to launch the model much earlier than initially planned, closing the performance gap against rival AI developers OpenAI and Anthropic. Kavukcuoglu dismissed concerns about Google permanently losing ground, stating that it remains a certainty in his mind that Google will always operate at the technological frontier.
