Google-Sponsored Pilot Unlocks Environmental Revenue Streams for Battery Storage Assets
A pilot project sponsored by Google has successfully demonstrated the ability to unlock environmental revenue streams for utility-scale battery storage assets. The three-month demonstration, conducted by Quintrace, esVolta, and LevelTen Energy, utilized time-stamped Granular Certificates (GCs) to match surplus solar energy with grid-connected battery storage.
The project created a new structure to bridge the mismatch between traditional corporate renewable matching, which relies on annual targets, and battery storage's hourly operation. This allowed for more project revenue to be unlocked.
Under the pilot's contracting framework, Google contracted directly with battery operators to time-shift environmental attributes it already owned without taking on battery tolling agreements or asset operational control. Battery owners retained full flexibility to respond to energy market price signals and real-time grid emergencies.
