Google Suncatcher Launches AI Data Center into Outer Space

Google is pushing the boundaries of artificial intelligence (AI) by launching its first AI data center into outer space. The company will test a prototype satellite carrying Tensor Processing Units, custom chips behind its AI services, on SpaceX's Transporter-18 rideshare launch next week.

The project, called Suncatcher, aims to explore whether massive AI computing clusters can run on satellites. Solar panels in low Earth orbit can collect up to eight times more energy than those on the ground, making outer space a promising spot for power generation.

However, experts warn that orbital data centers remain years from commercial viability. Google plans two more satellites in 2027 to test laser links between future computing clusters.
