Google Supports Near-Zero Emissions Steel with Stegra Partnership
Alphabet Inc.'s Google has partnered with Swedish steelmaker Stegra to purchase environmental attribute certificates from its new, near-zero-emissions steel plant in Boden, Sweden.
The facility uses renewable electricity to generate hydrogen, which reacts with iron ore to produce iron, reducing emissions by as much as 95% compared to traditional blast furnaces. The first year of production will yield up to 91,000 metric tons of steel.
Google's purchase of the certificates does not represent physical steel deliveries but allows the company to market conventional steel it uses at construction sites elsewhere as green. This model helps channel capital directly to Stegra and its innovative technology.
The partnership is part of Google's efforts to reduce embodied carbon emissions from data center infrastructure, aiming for a 40% reduction through initiatives like this one. The company has already integrated low-carbon materials in over 20 construction projects since 2025.
