Google Tackles Space Computing with AI-Powered Satellite Launch
Google has successfully launched a prototype satellite into orbit as part of an experiment to test its artificial-intelligence processors in space. The spacecraft, developed with Planet Labs (PL), was carried aboard SpaceX's Transporter-18 rideshare mission on October 1.
The company plans to expose its Tensor Processing Units, or TPUs, to conditions that cannot be fully reproduced on the ground, including radiation and launch-related forces. Initial operations are proceeding as expected, with Google establishing communication with the satellite.
The experiment aims to pave the way for a broader concept in which satellites could provide computing capacity for machine-learning workloads. Future versions may use groups of satellites linked through high-bandwidth laser connections.
