Google Takes First Step Towards Space-Based AI Data Centers
Google has launched Project Suncatcher, an ambitious effort to develop AI data centers in space. The project's first step is a refrigerator-sized satellite that carries four Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) designed for machine learning tasks. These chips will run Google's Gemma AI model for 15 minutes at a time due to heat management constraints.
The satellite, which was launched into a sun-synchronous orbit by SpaceX, is a prototype designed to test the feasibility of space-based data centers. According to Travis Beals, senior director and lead of Project Suncatcher, 'the sun puts out almost all of the power in our solar system.'
While there are many challenges to overcome, including heat dissipation and maintenance, Google is confident that space-based data centers can provide virtually unlimited free energy. The company plans to launch two more satellites next year to test their connection and pave the way for clusters of satellites that will form space-based data centers.
