Google Teams Up with Georgia Power on Nuclear Reactor Upgrades

Georgia Power is seeking approval from the Georgia Public Service Commission to upgrade four of its nuclear reactors, including two at Plant Vogtle and one each at Plants Hatch. The upgrades will increase energy production and provide 'approximately $900 million in projected benefits to customers over the life of the units.'

The utility plans to create a subscription program that allows large customers like Google to pay for both the upgrade costs and receive credits toward their clean energy target. This is part of Google's goal to use only carbon-free energy by 2030.

Georgia Power recently completed its expansion at Plant Vogtle, adding the first two new nuclear reactors in decades. However, this project was years behind schedule and came in billions over budget.
