Google Teams with Georgia Power for Vogtle and Hatch Nuclear Plant Uprates
Google has agreed to support uprates on Georgia Power's share of the Vogtle and Hatch nuclear plants in the US state of Georgia. The uprates will add around 96 MW of new capacity to the grid, achieved through a process called an Extended Power Uprate (EPU). This increases the electrical output of the reactors by making targeted modifications and upgrades to plant equipment.
The agreement is subject to approval by the Georgia Public Service Commission and includes a new Nuclear Uprate tariff structure. Google will subscribe to this tariff and receive Zero-Emission Credits representing the carbon-free attributes of the nuclear energy generated by the uprates.
This is part of a series of agreements signed by Google securing long-term power from nuclear plants in the USA and overseas. The company's data centers are 'long-term investments in the communities we call home' according to Director, Advanced Energy Technologies at Google, Lucia Tian.
