Google Tests AI Chips in Orbit with Prototype Satellite

Google is set to launch its first prototype satellite next week as part of its research project 'Suncatcher'. The mission aims to test whether space can become a viable location for large-scale AI computing systems.

The satellite will carry Google's tensor processing units (TPUs) and will be launched on SpaceX's Transporter-18 rideshare mission. In low Earth orbit, specialists will test how the hardware withstands launch stresses, radiation, and extreme temperature swings.

Space radiation can disrupt electronics and cause data errors, which is why testing in a real space environment is essential. Google has already tested its TPU processors on AI tasks in a lab at the University of California, Davis, but this test will provide valuable insights into how they perform in orbit.

The satellite's cooling system, which combines heat pipes and radiators, will also be tested. This design is necessary because conventional air cooling is impossible in space.
