Google Tests AI Chips in Space, Musk Shows Support

Google's Project Suncatcher is set to test its AI chips, Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), in space as part of a mission called Transporter-18. The TPUs will launch aboard a SpaceX rocket and will be used to evaluate the performance of Google's AI chips in orbit.

The project aims to address AI's growing energy demands by developing space-based data centers that can harness solar power more efficiently, according to Google CEO Sundar Pichai. He said 'Can our TPUs survive and operate in space? Well, we're going to find out.'

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk expressed his support for the venture with two rocket emojis, indicating his enthusiasm for the project.

The mission is a joint effort between Google, SpaceX, and Planet Labs, and will carry a prototype satellite for the test. The TPUs are designed to run for about 15 minutes before cooling down, while the satellite is designed to operate for roughly one year.
