Google Tests AI Chips in Space with Project Suncatcher
Google is set to test its AI chips in space as part of Project Suncatcher, a research effort to explore the potential for space-based infrastructure to host large-scale AI computing. The company will launch a prototype satellite next week on SpaceX's Transporter-18 rideshare launch and send it into low Earth orbit to assess how its Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) perform in space.
The TPUs are designed to withstand the harsh conditions of space, including radiation and extreme temperatures, but Google needs to test them in real-world conditions. The first Suncatcher mission will gather data on the performance of the AI chips and identify potential failure points.
Google plans to launch two satellites in 2027 to test high-bandwidth laser links needed to connect future computing clusters. While companies like SpaceX and Starcloud are also exploring space-based data centers, experts say that the concept remains years from being commercially viable due to high launch costs and engineering constraints.
