Google Tests AI Chips in Space with Prototype Satellite Launch

Google is pushing the boundaries of artificial intelligence (AI) computing by launching a prototype satellite to test its Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) in space. The mission, part of Project Suncatcher, aims to explore whether large-scale AI infrastructure can operate effectively in the harsh conditions of space.

The satellite, carrying Google's TPU chips, will be launched aboard SpaceX's Transporter-18 rideshare mission next week. The test is crucial as it will examine how the AI hardware withstands launch forces, radiation, and extreme temperatures. These challenges are significant concerns for any electronic component operating in space.

Google has already tested its TPUs in a facility at the University of California, Davis, but an orbital test is necessary to understand their performance in the actual space environment. The company will also investigate how to remove heat from its power-intensive chips using a novel cooling approach combining heat pipes and radiators.
