Google Tests AI Chips in Space with Prototype Satellite Launch
Google is pushing the boundaries of artificial intelligence (AI) by sending its custom-designed Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) into space for testing. The company has launched a prototype satellite as part of SpaceX's Transporter-18 mission, aiming to determine whether its AI chips can withstand the harsh conditions of space.
The satellite, developed in collaboration with Planet, is part of Project Suncatcher, Google's research into scalable AI infrastructure in space. The ultimate goal is to create a data center in space by linking clusters of satellites equipped with dozens of TPUs via high-speed optical connections.
Solar power is another key aspect of this endeavor, as satellites in low Earth orbit can capture sunlight almost continuously, generating up to eight times more energy than on Earth. This could reduce the strain on Earth's power grids and provide a sustainable source of energy for computing power.
Google has already pre-tested its TPUs for launch-related vibrations and radiation exposure, with the chips showing they can withstand more radiation than would be encountered during a five-year space mission.
