Google Tests Direct Flipkart Purchases via Gemini and AI Mode

Google has begun testing a new feature that allows users to purchase products from Flipkart's platform directly via Gemini and AI Mode services. The test is currently limited to a small group of users and a few products, including smartphones, electronics, and mobile phone accessories. When pressed, the 'Buy' button takes the user directly to Flipkart's checkout page.

The move reflects Google's efforts to expand the role of artificial intelligence from simply discovering and suggesting products to directly participating in purchases. The company plans to expand this experience later in October, ahead of India's festive shopping season.

This development comes as Google and its competitors work to add e-commerce capabilities to their AI services. The company is also developing the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open standard that allows AI agents to interact with retailers across various stages of the shopping journey.
