Google Tests Pay-for-Use Model for Publisher Content in AI Answers

Google is testing a new payment model for publishers whose content helps power its AI-generated answers. The program, called the AI Contribution Pilot, allows select publishers to earn based on qualifying usage of their content in AI search features such as Gemini and AI Overviews.

The pilot differs from traditional content licensing deals, where publishers receive a fixed or upfront payment. Instead, Google's new model rewards publishers for the actual contribution of their content to an AI response.

While some publishers have reportedly found the initial payments relatively small compared to their advertising revenues, the program could offer a new way to monetize content used by AI systems without negotiating individual licensing deals.

The pilot is still at an early stage, and its long-term commercial impact remains unclear. However, it signals a potential shift in how publishers are paid as search moves beyond traditional models of links and clicks towards AI-generated answers.
