Google Tests Pay-Per-Value AI Licensing Scheme for Publishers

Google is quietly testing a pay-per-value AI licensing scheme for publishers through its AI contribution pilot. The program, which has been in place since at least April 2026, rewards publishers for content that significantly contributes to Google's AI-generated responses in products such as Gemini and AI Overviews.

The AI contribution pilot allows publishers to earn money when their content influences the generation of AI responses, but not when it is used to confirm facts or linked within Google's AI after a response is generated. The program has been more appealing to small and mid-sized publishers rather than large ones.

Google confirmed that the scheme is an early-stage learning pilot to test how best to reward high-quality content on top of the traffic and tools it already provides. At least dozens of publishers have been approached by Google for the AI contribution pilot, but the program's specifics are still being figured out.
