Google Tests Seamless Shopping Experience in India with Flipkart
Google is testing a new shopping experience in India where users can buy products directly from Flipkart within Google's AI Mode and Gemini. The limited test allows some users to select a Flipkart product and proceed to a Flipkart-branded checkout without leaving the AI interface.
The experiment, which covers certain users and selected products including smartphones and electronics, aims to make online shopping more seamless by integrating the decision-making process with the buying experience. However, it raises questions about who owns the online shopping journey when it begins with an AI assistant.
Flipkart is one of India's major online retailers and is owned by Walmart, while Google has a financial connection through its investment in Flipkart in 2024. The partnership makes the design worth examining closely as shoppers want useful choices, retailers want access to customers, and Google operates the interface where recommendations may appear.
The test does not establish whether Flipkart products receive preference in Gemini or AI Mode, but it shows a difference in purchasing capability among some listings. Other retailers' products still appear alongside Flipkart items without an in-interface Buy option, leaving questions about how wider participation might work.
