Google Tests Space-Based AI Computing with Four Tensor Processing Units
Google is about to launch its first test of space-based AI computing on October 1 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The mission, dubbed MVP, will carry four Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) into low Earth orbit. These custom chips power much of Google's AI training and inference.
The satellite also includes solar panels to run the TPUs, which can generate up to eight times more energy than the same panels on the ground. This is crucial because data center power demand tied to AI workloads grew roughly 50% in 2025 alone, and utilities across the U.S. are years behind on transmission and generation capacity.
The goal of MVP is not to build a data center in space but to test whether Trillium-generation TPUs can survive the extreme conditions of space. Google has already tested the chips for radiation exposure and thermal swings in a lab setting, but this will be their first real-world test.
