Google Tests Space-Based AI Data Centers for Solar-Powered Computing

Google is taking its artificial intelligence (AI) ambitions to new heights - literally. The tech giant has announced plans to launch a test satellite into space next week as part of an effort to explore the possibility of operating AI data centers in orbit.

The project, called 'Project Suncatcher,' aims to harness the power of solar energy to run AI computing systems in space. According to Google, the biggest advantage of putting AI in space is access to solar power, which is significantly more powerful than on Earth due to the lack of atmospheric interference.

Each panel on the test satellite will produce a relatively small amount of power - roughly enough to run a hair dryer - but researchers say this could still be enough to complete simple AI tasks from space. Google envisions using solar panels to provide the power needed to run AI computing systems in orbit, which could eventually help reduce demand on terrestrial power systems.

The test will focus on whether the technology can survive a rocket launch, operate in orbit and reliably perform AI computing tasks from space. If successful, the satellites could last about six years before eventually burning up.
