Google Tests Space-Based Data Centers for AI Infrastructure
Google has launched a prototype satellite into orbit to test the feasibility of using space-based data centers for large-scale artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure.
The satellite, built by Planet Labs and launched on SpaceX's Transporter-18 rideshare, is equipped with Google's Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) designed to handle AI workloads.
Google aims to explore the potential of space-based data centers to mitigate growing concerns over energy consumption and public opposition to traditional data center projects.
The project, dubbed 'Project Suncatcher', seeks to harness abundant solar energy in low-earth orbit, where satellites can capture up to eight times more solar power than on Earth.
Google will test the performance of TPU chips in space and assess their ability to withstand radiation, extreme temperatures, and other environmental factors.
