Google Tests Space-Based Data Centers in Ambitious 'Moonshot'

Google is taking a novel approach to addressing growing discontent with its massive data centers. The tech giant has partnered with Planet Labs to launch a test satellite, dubbed Project Suncatcher, into Earth's orbit. This first-of-its-kind experiment aims to determine the feasibility of using space-based data centers to supplement on-ground infrastructure.

The fridge-sized satellite will be launched atop a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and will house specialized data-center chips designed to withstand the harsh conditions of liftoff, space radiation, freezing temperatures, and microgravity. Google's Project Suncatcher webpage describes it as a 'moonshot,' evoking the ambitious Apollo program.

However, experts warn that deploying fleets of closely packed satellites containing racks of advanced chips poses numerous engineering and financial challenges. These include managing traffic in crowded orbits, building out a launch infrastructure to scale up, and addressing prohibitively high launch costs and technical challenges involving cooling, communication, and navigating 'space traffic.'
