Google Tests Space-Based Data Centers with Launch of First Prototype Satellite
Google has launched its first test satellite for Project Suncatcher, an initiative to build orbital data centers in space. The prototype was sent into orbit aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and is designed to test how Google's tensor processing units (TPUs) perform in space.
The environment of Earth orbit presents numerous technological challenges, including radiation, heat dissipation, and congestion in space. Google will have to contend with these issues if it wants to build operational data centers in space.
The company plans to continue its research in 2027 by sending up two additional satellites. However, experts warn that the technology is still in its infancy and there are many challenges to overcome before orbital data centers become a reality.
