Google Tightens Grip on Free AI Access, Reserves Top Models for Paid Subscribers
Google is making significant changes to its artificial intelligence (AI) model access across its ecosystem. The company's developer-focused platform, Antigravity, will integrate Anthropic's flagship models, Claude Opus 5.5 and Claude Sonnet 5.5, but with strict restrictions on who can deploy them.
The new models will be available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, while Promo and Trial Pro users will not have access. Free, AI Plus, and Enterprise plans are excluded completely, although Student Plans' status remains unclear.
Additionally, the free tier in the Gemini app will see its model options significantly scaled back starting October 9, with only Flash-Lite available to users without a paid subscription. Google is aligning its app strategy with the high compute demands required for multi-modal models at scale.
The structural shifts set the stage for Google's next-generation architecture, with upcoming Gemini 4 family models expected to inherit the strict access structure from day one. The highly anticipated Gemini 4 Argon model will likely be restricted to Pro and Ultra subscribers upon broad release.
