Google to Shift Pixel Production Away from China
Google is planning to relocate production of its Pixel smartphones, smartwatches, and wireless earbuds from China by 2027. The move comes amid escalating tensions between Beijing and Washington, which have led to punitive tariffs, export controls, and the risk of sudden disruptions.
The decision is a result of Google's efforts to diversify its supply chain. According to Nikkei, the company has been shifting production capacity to India and Vietnam in recent years. In 2023, Google reportedly shifted production of some high-end Pixel smartphones to Vietnam, which has given it confidence to relocate the rest of the lineup out of China.
India is particularly attractive for Google due to Samsung's extensive smartphone manufacturing ecosystem already established there. This will enable Google to tap into an existing infrastructure and reduce costs associated with setting up a new one. Additionally, labor and regulatory costs in China are rising, while India and Vietnam offer more favorable conditions and growing manufacturing ecosystems.
Google expects Pixel smartphone shipments to grow by 8-10% from approximately 12 million units last year. The company is focused on maintaining unit shipment growth despite rising component costs. While relocating production will require significant investments, it is expected to improve supply-chain resilience and reduce over-reliance on a single country.
