Google TV’s Find My Remote feature saves users from buying replacements
Google TV Streamer 4K users may soon appreciate a feature they never knew they needed: Find My Remote. Jade Bryan, a tech journalist, recently found himself scrambling to locate his misplaced remote, nearly resorting to buying a replacement. Fortunately, he recalled the built-in tracking feature that saved him from the hassle.
The Google TV Voice Remote, redesigned for the Streamer 4K, includes a customizable shortcut button and a more ergonomic shape. However, its sleek design and neutral colors make it easy to lose among household furnishings. The Find My Remote feature addresses this issue with a built-in speaker that emits an audible alert when triggered, helping users locate their remote quickly.
To use the feature, users can press a dedicated button on the back of the Google TV Streamer, issue a voice command via Gemini, or navigate through the Google TV mobile app. The remote must remain connected to the Streamer via Bluetooth LE for the feature to work effectively. While it operates well within the same room, its range may drop if the remote is moved to another area.
Despite its usefulness, the feature has a notable limitation: it only works when the remote is within wireless range of the Streamer. Bryan highlights how this feature could prevent many lost remotes from ending up under cushions or trapped under furniture, suggesting it should be a standard inclusion in all smart TV remotes.
